Fine Furniture
Richard In His Shop
Nobody's shop is ever big enough, but I make do with what I have. My furniture making process actually starts in a lean-to shed behind this building where I have a small sawmill. I process oak, maple, birch and cherry, then plane it, dry it for a year or two depending on thickness and then proceed with the actual furniture making. I also buy highly figured and specialty woods that don't grow in Maine. As you can tell from looking through the gallery page I enjoy adapting an older and more classical style of furniture to modern tastes, but I try to be flexible to accommodate my patrons.
I use both modern power tools and modern techniques as well as traditional hand tools and joinery, depending upon what feels most appropriate and promises to last the longest. I enjoy the challenge of combining wood with marble or our ceramic tiles and using curves, twists, spirals and carving to create a harmonious piece of work.
Please feel free to contact me with your requirements regarding size, shape proportion, type of wood and budget. I try to be accommodating.
